Nepal plane crash - 10 things to know with detail
  • On May 12, 2021, a small plane carrying 22 people crashed in a remote mountainous area in western Nepal.
  • The aircraft, a Twin Otter operated by Summit Air, was flying from the resort town of Pokhara to Jumla when it lost contact with air traffic control.
  • The plane crashed near the town of Tirkhedhunga, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of its destination, Jumla Airport.
  • The crash site was located at an altitude of around 9,500 feet, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach the area.
  • The plane was carrying 18 passengers and 4 crew members, including two infants. There were no survivors.
  • The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but poor weather conditions, including heavy rain and fog, may have been a contributing factor.
  • This is not the first aviation incident involving Summit Air. In 2019, one of their planes skidded off the runway at Lukla Airport, known as one of the most dangerous airports in the world.
  • The Nepalese government has ordered an investigation into the crash to determine the cause and prevent future accidents.
  • The crash has once again raised concerns about the safety of air travel in Nepal, where mountainous terrain and challenging weather conditions can make flying risky.
  • The families of the victims, as well as the aviation community in Nepal, are mourning the loss of those onboard the ill-fated flight.
