Nirjala Ekadashi - 10 things to know with detail
  • Nirjala Ekadashi is a sacred Hindu fasting day that falls on the 11th day of the waxing moon in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, which usually occurs in May or June.
  • Unlike other Ekadashi fasts where devotees consume water and fruits, Nirjala Ekadashi is a strict fast where one abstains from both food and water for the entire day and night.
  • The word "Nirjala" means without water, highlighting the significance of this Ekadashi as the most austere and difficult one to observe.
  • It is believed that observing Nirjala Ekadashi fasting is equivalent to fasting on all the other Ekadashi days of the year. Therefore, it is considered highly meritorious and beneficial for spiritual growth.
  • The legend behind Nirjala Ekadashi is that it was introduced by Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers from the epic Mahabharata, who was unable to fast on the other Ekadashi days due to his insatiable hunger. To overcome this, he observed Nirjala Ekadashi and attained the same benefits.
  • Devotees wake up early on Nirjala Ekadashi day, take a ritual bath, and visit temples to offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. They also listen to religious discourses and perform various rituals to seek the blessings of the deity.
  • The fast is broken on the next day, Dwadashi, after the sunrise, with the consumption of water and a simple meal. Some devotees also break their fast with a special feast known as "parana" involving a variety of dishes.
  • Observing Nirjala Ekadashi is believed to purify the mind, body, and soul, and bring peace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment to the individual.
  • It is said that those who observe Nirjala Ekadashi with sincerity and devotion are absolved of their sins, attain spiritual enlightenment, and earn the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
  • Apart from the spiritual significance, Nirjala Ekadashi also promotes self-discipline, self-control, and empathy towards those who are less fortunate and do not have access to basic necessities like food and water.
