Nirjala Ekadashi Vrat - 10 things to know with detail
  • Nirjala Ekadashi is considered the most austere and difficult Ekadashi vrat to observe as it involves fasting without even consuming water. It falls on the 11th day of the waxing and waning moon in the Hindu calendar month of Jyeshtha.
  • The word "Nirjala" means without water, and hence, on this day, devotees observe a strict fast without consuming any food or water for the entire day and night.
  • This Ekadashi is believed to be the most rewarding and powerful among all Ekadashi vratas as it is said to cleanse all sins and grant spiritual upliftment to the devotees.
  • The legend behind Nirjala Ekadashi is associated with the Pandava prince Bhima, who was unable to observe the regular Ekadashi vrat due to his voracious appetite. Upon learning about the benefits of Nirjala Ekadashi from sage Vyasa, Bhima observed this vrat and was blessed with spiritual enlightenment.
  • Devotees wake up early on Nirjala Ekadashi and take a bath before sunrise. They then offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and seek his blessings for their well-being and spiritual growth.
  • Throughout the day, devotees engage in reciting prayers, reading sacred texts, and performing acts of charity to purify their minds and souls.
  • In the evening, devotees visit temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and participate in special prayers and rituals conducted on this auspicious day.
  • The fast is broken on the next day, Dwadashi, after the sunrise, with a special meal prepared without grains, known as "parana."
  • Observing Nirjala Ekadashi vrat is believed to bestow prosperity, good health, and spiritual advancement upon the devotees. It is also said to fulfill one's wishes and remove obstacles from their path.
  • It is important to note that Nirjala Ekadashi vrat is not recommended for pregnant women, children, the elderly, or individuals with health conditions that may be adversely affected by fasting. Consultation with a healthcare provider is advisable before undertaking such a rigorous fast.
