He was born on October 30, 1962, in Neunkirchen, West Germany.
Kuntz began his professional career with Borussia Neunkirchen before moving on to VfL Bochum, 1. FC Kaiserslautern, Besiktas, Arminia Bielefeld, and Urawa Red Diamonds.
He is best known for his time at Kaiserslautern, where he won two Bundesliga titles in 1991 and 1998.
