Early Life: Jim Tressel was born on December 5, 1952, in Mentor, Ohio. He grew up in a football-loving family and played quarterback at Berea High School, where he led his team to a state championship in 1970.
College Career: Tressel attended Baldwin Wallace University, where he played quarterback and earned a bachelor's degree in education. He later earned a master's degree in education from the University of Akron.
Coaching Career: Tressel began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Akron in 1975. He went on to coach at Miami University, Syracuse University, and Ohio State University before landing his first head coaching job at Youngstown State University in 1986.
Youngstown State Success: Tressel had a highly successful tenure at Youngstown State, leading the Penguins to four NCAA Division I-AA national championships in 1991, 1993, 1994, and 1997.
Ohio State Years: Tressel was hired as the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes in 2001. During his tenure, he led the team to a national championship in 2002 and six Big Ten championships.
Controversy: In 2010, Tressel came under fire for failing to report NCAA violations committed by some of his players. He was eventually forced to resign as head coach of Ohio State in May 2011.
Sanctions: In the wake of the NCAA violations, Ohio State was hit with sanctions that included a postseason ban and the loss of scholarships. Tressel was also given a show-cause penalty, which effectively barred him from coaching in college football for several years.
