The game is played on a large oval-shaped field known as a cricket ground. In the center of the field, there is a rectangular strip of ground called the pitch. At each end of the pitch, there are wooden structures called wickets. Each wicket consists of three vertical stumps with two small horizontal pieces of wood, known as bails, balanced on top.
The team that wins the toss decides whether to bat or bowl first. The batting team sends two players, known as batsmen, to the pitch.
