  • Kamala Harris is the first female, first Black, and first South Asian Vice President of the United States. She made history when she was sworn in on January 20, 2021.
  • Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan Harris, was a Tamil Indian cancer researcher, and her father, Donald J. Harris, is a Jamaican-American Stanford University economics professor.
  • Harris attended Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, D.C., where she majored in political science and economics. She then went on to earn her law degree from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.
