Letitia James is an American lawyer and politician who currently serves as the Attorney General of New York.
She was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 18, 1958.
James attended Howard University, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981. She went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law in 1986.
Prior to becoming Attorney General, James served as a member of the New York City Council, representing the 35th district in Brooklyn.
She was the first African American woman to hold citywide office in New York City when she was elected Public Advocate in 2013.
James has been a strong advocate for affordable housing, criminal justice reform, and protecting consumers from fraud and abuse.
During her tenure as Public Advocate, she established a Tenant Protection Unit to combat landlord harassment and advocate for tenants' rights.
James has also been a vocal critic of former President Donald Trump, filing numerous lawsuits against his administration and his businesses.
In 2018, James was elected as the Attorney General of New York, becoming the first woman of color to hold the position.
