  • Nirjala Ekadashi is a significant Hindu fasting day that falls on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of the waxing phase of the moon in the Hindu month of Jyeshtha, usually in the month of May or June.
  • The word "Nirjala" means without water, and this Ekadashi is unique because devotees observe a complete fast without consuming even a drop of water for the entire day and night.
  • Nirjala Ekadashi is believed to be the most auspicious of all Ekadashi fasts and is said to be equivalent to observing all 24 Ekadashi fasts throughout the year.
  • It is believed that observing Nirjala Ekadashi helps in washing away all sins, purifying the mind and body, and bestowing blessings and spiritual upliftment upon the devotee.
  • Devotees wake up early in the morning, take a holy bath, and then worship Lord Vishnu with fruits, flowers, and incense. They also recite prayers and mantras dedicated to Lord Vishnu throughout the day.
  • Since fasting without water can be challenging, devotees prepare special dishes like sabudana khichdi, fruits, and dry fruits to break their fast after sunrise on the next day (Dwadashi).
  • It is believed that by observing Nirjala Ekadashi, devotees can attain the same benefits as performing a yajna (fire sacrifice), donating cows, or observing other religious austerities.
  • The legend associated with Nirjala Ekadashi is the story of Bhima, one of the Pandava brothers, who was unable to observe regular Ekadashi fasts due to his voracious appetite. Upon the advice of Sage Vyasa, he observed Nirjala Ekadashi and was blessed with the same benefits.
  • Devotees believe that by observing Nirjala Ekadashi with devotion and sincerity, they can seek forgiveness for their past sins, attain spiritual progress, and gain the blessings of Lord Vishnu for a happy and prosperous life.
