Cricket match - 10 things to know with detail
  • Format: Cricket matches can be played in various formats including Test matches, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and Twenty20 (T20) matches.
  • Teams: A cricket match is played between two teams, each consisting of 11 players.
  • Toss: Before the start of the match, a coin toss is held to determine which team will bat or bowl first.
  • Innings: Each team gets a chance to bat and bowl in an innings. In limited-overs matches like ODIs and T20s, each team gets a fixed number of overs to bat.
  • Runs: The batting team's objective is to score as many runs as possible by hitting the ball and running between the wickets.
  • Wickets: The fielding team's objective is to take wickets by getting the batsmen out. A batsman is out if their stumps are knocked over, caught by a fielder, or dismissed in other ways.
  • Boundaries: Runs can be scored by hitting the ball to the boundary ropes. A boundary earns the batting team either 4 runs (if the ball crosses the boundary on the ground) or 6 runs (if the ball crosses the boundary without touching the ground).
  • Extras: Apart from runs scored by the batsmen, the batting team can also score extras like wides, no-balls, and byes, which add to their total score.
  • Fielding: The fielding team tries to restrict the batting team's runs by fielding well, taking catches, and effecting run-outs.
  • Result: The match can end in a win for one of the teams, a tie, or a draw, depending on the format of the match and the number of runs scored by each team.
