The Palace of Versailles is a royal château in the Île-de-France region of France, located in the department of Yvelines, about 20 kilometers southwest of the center of Paris. It is one of the most famous and opulent palaces in the world, and was the principal royal residence of France from 1682 until the start of the French Revolution in The palace was originally built by Louis XIII in 1623 as a hunting lodge, and was later expanded by Louis XIV into a magnificent palace.
