European Parliament
The European Parliament in Strasbourg, France is the legislative branch of the European Union. It is composed of 705 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) who are elected by citizens of the 28 member states of the European Union. The Parliament meets in Strasbourg for 12 plenary sessions a year, and also holds additional meetings in Brussels. The Parliament is responsible for passing European laws, approving the EU budget, and electing the President of the European Commission. It also has the power to approve or reject international agreements negotiated by the European Commission. The Parliament also has the power to initiate legislation, and it has the right to question the European Commission and other EU institutions.
