Mount Vesuvius is an active stratovolcano located on the Gulf of Naples in Italy. It is the only volcano on the European mainland to have erupted within the last hundred years, and is most famous for its eruption in 79 AD that destroyed the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. The volcano is about 3,000 feet (914 m) high and has a base diameter of about 8 miles (13 km). It is characterized by steep, conical slopes and a crater at the summit.
