Leaning Tower of Pisa

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is a freestanding bell tower located in the city of Pisa, Italy. It is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa and is renowned for its unintended tilt to one side. Construction of the tower began in 1173 and was completed in The tower stands 55.86 meters (183.27 feet) tall on a base of 14.45 meters (47.41 feet) square and leans at an angle of 3.99 degrees. The tilt began during construction, caused by an inadequate foundation on ground too soft on one side to properly support the structure's weight. Despite numerous efforts to stabilize the tower, the tilt increased until the structure was stabilized (and the tilt partially corrected) by efforts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. The tower is a symbol of Pisa and is one of the most recognizable structures in the world.
