Hiram M. Chittenden Locks

The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, also known as the Ballard Locks, are a complex of locks, dams, and spillways located in Seattle, Washington, United States. The locks, which are part of the Lake Washington Ship Canal, provide a passage for boats between the fresh waters of Lake Washington and the salt waters of Puget Sound. The locks are named after Hiram M. Chittenden, the first US Army Corps of Engineers officer to serve in the Pacific Northwest. The locks are operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers and are open to the public. The locks are used by recreational and commercial vessels, and are a popular tourist attraction. The locks are also home to a fish ladder, which allows salmon to migrate between the lake and the sound.
