Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal. It is located on the east bank of the Hooghly River, approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) upstream from the Bay of Bengal. Kolkata is the third-most populous metropolitan area in India, after Mumbai and Delhi. It is also the cultural and educational hub of East India, with numerous universities, colleges, and research institutions.
