Heian Shrine - Kyoto - Japan
Heian Shrine
Heian Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in Kyoto, Japan. It was built in 1895 to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the ancient capital of Heian-kyo (now Kyoto). The shrine is dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Kammu and his consort, Empress Kōken. The shrine is known for its large, bright red torii gate, which stands at the entrance to the shrine grounds. Inside the shrine grounds, visitors can find a large pond, a garden, and a variety of buildings, including the main hall, the Heian-kyo Palace, and the Heian-kyo Museum. The shrine is also home to a number of festivals throughout the year, including the Aoi Matsuri in May and the Jidai Matsuri in October.
