Alcatraz Island
Alcatraz Island is a 22-acre island located in the San Francisco Bay, just 25 miles offshore from San Francisco, California. It is best known as the site of the notorious federal prison that operated from 1934 to 1963. The island is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is a popular tourist destination, offering tours of the prison, as well as a lighthouse, a military fortification, and natural features such as rock pools and a seabird colony. Alcatraz is also home to the oldest operating lighthouse on the West Coast of the United States.
