The Golden Gate Bridge is an iconic suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate strait, the one-mile-wide, three-mile-long channel between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The bridge is one of the most internationally recognized symbols of San Francisco, California, and the United States. It has been declared one of the Wonders of the Modern World by the American Society of Civil Engineers. The bridge is a suspension bridge with two towers that reach 746 feet (227 m) above the water. The bridge has a main span of 4,200 feet (1,280 m) and a total length of 8,981 feet (2,737 m). The bridge is painted an orange-vermilion color called "international orange" and is one of the most photographed bridges in the world.
