Angelokastro Castle

Angelokastro is a Byzantine castle located in Corfu, Greece. It is situated on the top of the highest peak of the island's shoreline and it is the most important surviving medieval fortress in Corfu. The castle dates back to the 13th century and was built by the Angeloi, a Byzantine family of noble descent. It was used to protect the island from pirate raids and to control the maritime trade routes. The castle is composed of two distinct parts: the upper and the lower. The upper part is a fortified acropolis with a triangular shape and three towers, while the lower part is a fortified settlement with a rectangular shape and two towers. The walls of the castle are made of stone and are up to 3 meters thick. Inside the castle there are several buildings, including a chapel, a cistern, and a small church. The castle is surrounded by a deep moat and is accessible via a drawbridge.
