Fort Aguada - Goa - India
Fort Aguada
Fort Aguada is a 17th-century Portuguese fort located in Goa, India. It was constructed in 1612 to guard against the Dutch and the Marathas. The fort stands on the beach south of Candolim, at the mouth of the Mandovi River. It was the most prized and crucial fort of Portuguese India. The fort is divided into two segments. The upper part, which is the fort proper, is a quadrangular structure with four bastions. It houses the St. Lawrence Chapel, a lighthouse, and a two-storeyed keep. The lower part of the fort is a large crescent-shaped wall enclosing the Aguada Bay. It was used as a storage for ammunition and provisions. The fort also has a freshwater spring, which supplied water to the ships that called there. The fort is now a popular tourist destination and is also used as a prison.
